About Utba ibn Abi Sufyan
Utba ibn Abi Sufyan ibn Harb was a member of the Umayyad dynasty, an early Islamic administrator, and a military commander who served as the Umayyad governor of Egypt in 664–665. Born during the lifetime of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, he rose to administrative prominence under Caliph Umar, governing Taif before becoming closely entangled in the political crises of the First Fitna. A staunch loyalist to his family's interests, he witnessed the assassination of Caliph Uthman, fought against Caliph Ali at the Battle of the Camel and the Battle of Siffin, and helped broker his family's rise to supreme power under his brother, Caliph Mu'awiya I.
