Israeli authorities arrested eight suspects in an ongoing operation investigating weekend settler attacks in the West Bank, including assaults on Palestinian olive harvesters, Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine and European diplomats. Police also seized vehicles and conducted related enforcement actions; the attacks drew international condemnation.
Masked Israeli settlers attacked a European diplomatic convoy from France, Belgium and Poland visiting the West Bank village of Taibeh during the olive harvest, smashing a vehicle window and knocking a diplomat to the ground. Israeli police said they had opened an investigation.
Reports say Israeli settlers set fire to a mosque, a vehicle and an olive tree in Mikhmas in the occupied West Bank, while other accounts described attacks on Palestinian homes and property, road blockages and theft elsewhere. Israel’s military said it was examining the mosque attack; the U.N. has warned that settler violence is contributing to Palestinian displacement, particularly in Bedouin and herding communities.
Palestinians say Israeli military machinery uprooted olive trees near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank; the military said it was checking the report. In Gaza, restricted access and bulldozing have devastated olive groves, leaving an estimated 150,000 of 2 million trees and a harvest far below normal, driving up prices and hurting families and farmers.
