Greenpeace Reports Fecal Contamination at 17 Yucatán Water Sites
Greenpeace reports that all 17 water sites tested near Mérida, Mexico, showed fecal contamination, with pig-specific testing detecting pig waste; municipal sewage and septic leaks may also be contributing. Because groundwater is the Yucatán’s main freshwater source, the group is calling for a halt to new industrial pig farms and expansions, while the study’s findings do not establish the source of all contamination.

About Yucatan Peninsula
The Yucatán Peninsula is a large peninsula in southeast Mexico and adjacent portions of Belize and Guatemala. The peninsula extends towards the northeast, separating the Gulf of Mexico to the north and west of the peninsula from the Caribbean Sea to the east. The Yucatán Channel, between the northeastern corner of the peninsula and Cuba, connects the two bodies of water.
