49ers Plan Kicker Talks After Seven Misses

San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Piñeiro has missed seven kicks in seven games this season—three field goals and four extra points—including an extra point in the team’s 29-20 loss to Atlanta. Coach Kyle Shanahan said he would discuss Piñeiro’s future with the team, but has not committed to bringing in another kicker; Piñeiro said he would review the film to identify what went wrong. The misses mark a sharp reversal from last season, when Piñeiro was highly accurate and earned a four-year, $17 million contract. Moving on could be costly: the deal includes substantial guaranteed money, and reports estimate releasing him now would leave nearly $6 million in dead-cap charges.
