Excavations at the former St Mary's mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway, have uncovered 99 infant remains since July 2025, with 22 more discovered in the latest period from June 1 to July 15. The finds come from an area covered with gravel and used for vehicle access, lacking surface burial markers, and researchers have focused on identifying infants who died at the home between 1925 and 1961. A 2014 study led by Catherine Corless suggested as many as 796 babies and young children were buried in a sewage system at the facility, though the current dig is uncovering remains in other subsurface contexts. The Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention Tuam (ODAIT) oversees the work, with coffined remains recovered and 62 DNA reference samples collected to aid identification. Project leaders say the decision to start digging outside the memorial garden, based on a 1970s map indicating a burial ground, has yielded results, and earlier finds include chambered tanks and disarticulated bones in the memorial area. Bon Secours Sisters have apologized for the institution’s history and contributed funds toward the excavation, as investigators continue to map remains to potential identities.
