John Waters will join the Australian cast of Fiddler on the Roof as Lazar Wolf, reuniting with Sigrid Thornton who will play Yente as the production heads to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. The revival, which originated in London and the West End after a run at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, has earned multiple Olivier Awards and widespread critical acclaim for its contemporary staging. Troy Sussman leads the cast as Tevye, with Alexis Fishman as Golde, as the show is presented in Australia for the first time as part of a nationwide tour. The Australian premiere is set for Sydney’s Theatre Royal on July 31, followed by tours to Brisbane and Melbourne before Perth’s season at His/Her Majesty’s Theatre in January 2027. Thornton’s joining Waters marks a notable reunion after their 1983 collaboration in All the Rivers Run, adding star power to the Australian leg of the tour. The production has been described as a bold reimagining of the classic, blending traditional score with a modern dramatic lens under director Jordan Fein.
