Sona Comstar DENSO form two EV powertrain JVs
Sona Comstar and DENSO Corporation have signed definitive agreements to create two joint ventures in India aimed at developing and manufacturing electric and hybrid powertrain systems for multiple vehicle segments. The first venture will focus on high-voltage liquid-cooled traction inverters, motors, and generators for four-wheelers and larger vehicles, with DENSO holding a 51% stake and management control. The second venture targets two- and three-wheelers, transferring Sona’s existing two- and three-wheeler electric traction motor and controller business to a subsidiary, with DENSO acquiring a 49% stake and Sona retaining 51% ownership and control; the two-wheeler unit is valued at ₹1,750 crore. These arrangements are designed to accelerate India’s electrification push by combining DENSO’s global technology with Sona Comstar’s local manufacturing and supply chain strengths. The transactions are subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals and may include licensing of IP and know-how between the majority-owned ventures on royalty terms. The deal underscores a broader strategy to leverage India’s role as a manufacturing and innovation hub for scalable, cost-efficient advanced powertrains.
