AMD and Anthropic have agreed to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AI infrastructure powered by AMD’s Instinct MI450/MI455X GPUs, with the first gigawatt slated to begin in the first half of 2027, and AMD will make an equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic. The Helios rack-scale systems will combine MI450 GPUs with AMD EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm software to support both training and inference for Anthropic’s Claude model, while also enabling Claude-driven workload tuning across AMD’s ROCm stack. The partnership marks AMD’s boldest push into AI infrastructure ownership and positions the company more directly against Nvidia by securing a multiyear, multi-gigawatt compute relationship with a high-profile frontier AI firm. Anthropic’s compute strategy will continue to rely on a diversified mix of providers, with the new deal expanding its capacity to power rapid growth and meet surging demand for Claude. The arrangement includes an engineering collaboration to optimize workloads for Instinct GPUs and broaden Claude’s deployment across both Anthropic’s facilities and cloud-like environments, alongside potential financing guarantees for Anthropic’s data-center leases.
