CVS Health to separate pharmacy and insurance units in 2028 split
CVS Health plans to separate into two publicly traded companies in the first half of 2028, reversing part of its push to build an integrated healthcare business. CVS Health will house Aetna, Caremark, specialty pharmacy, Oak Street Health, Signify Health and other care and services businesses; CVS Pharmacy will include about 9,000 stores, mail-order pharmacy, MinuteClinic and Health100. CEO David Joyner is slated to lead CVS Health, while current group president Prem Shah will lead CVS Pharmacy, and existing shareholders are expected to receive shares in both companies. CVS says the split will let each business focus and operate more nimbly, though critics note that its insurer, PBM and specialty pharmacy will remain together; the company said regulation did not drive the decision. CVS shares fell about 12% on the announcement.
