Federal health officials say the cyclospora outbreak linked to produce continues to expand, with the lettuce associated with Taco Bell now tied to 1,947 illnesses and hospitalizations across multiple states, including Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, in addition to previously affected Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. The investigation remains focused on Taylor Farms lettuce grown in central Mexico, which the FDA had identified as a likely source as part of a broader multistate outbreak. Overall, cyclospora cases have set a U.S. record, with more than 4,100 laboratory-confirmed illnesses since May 1 and investigations into more than 7,400 other likely cases across 41 states. Separately, a new cluster involving the parasite includes 72 cases and is under active investigation, with officials not yet identifying any products linked to the illnesses. Health guidance emphasizes food safety, including washing hands with soap and water and cooking produce to at least 70 C (158 F) to kill the parasite. To date, there have been no reported deaths from the outbreak.
