Afriski Mountain Resort in Lesotho's Maluti Mountains is the continent's only fully operational ski destination in sub-Saharan Africa, perched about 3,200 meters above sea level on 17 hectares of slopes. The resort relies on a combination of sub-zero winter temperatures and extensive artificial snowmaking to sustain the season from June to August amid climate fluctuations and drought pressures. Opened about 25 years ago, Afriski has grown into a key economic pillar for Lesotho, employing around 227 locals and drawing thousands of visitors, mostly from South Africa. Lesotho is the coldest country in Africa, a fact that underpins the resort's unusual alpine appeal in a region typically associated with savannas and deserts. The resort offers 420 overnight beds and supports nearby towns by providing tourism-related opportunities and regional employment. Maintaining snow in this environment is an ongoing engineering feat that highlights the resilience of southern African winter tourism.
