NVIDIA’s Jetson GPUs are set to power Lunar Outpost’s Moon rover, potentially marking the first GPU on the lunar surface, with the Jetson handling the rover’s LiDAR processing and real-time navigation. Lunar Outpost CEO Justin Cyrus says the team is comparing Jetson against traditional spaceflight compute to evaluate advantages and drawbacks in extreme space environments. NASA’s Artemis-era push is increasingly leaning on private companies to develop rovers and sensors to map terrain and identify resources ahead of a potential 2028 crewed return. NVIDIA has also teamed with Firefly Aerospace to place Jetson on a lunar-orbiting satellite to process imagery and monitor robots on the Moon, improving data transmission to Earth. The missions are scheduled to launch on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 later this year, with the next rover riding a lander from Intuitive Machines to study regions like Reiner Gamma, and subsequent LV3 and LV5 missions planned for broader exploration.
