OpenAI adds Codex and models to Google Cloud platform
OpenAI and Google announced on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, that OpenAI frontier models GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna, plus the Codex coding agent, will be available in Google Cloud’s Model Garden. They are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers, with general availability planned in the coming weeks. Purchases run through the Google Cloud Marketplace; enterprises can draw down existing GCP spend commitments, and usage appears on one Google Cloud invoice. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, said the partnership is an important step in making the models and Codex available where customers are already building. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company is focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI. OpenAI said Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner. Amazon Web Services began hosting OpenAI models in April 2026 after Microsoft’s exclusive license ended. Google said customer prompts and outputs stay within the customer’s data perimeter and are never used to train Google models, and that the OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure. Mike Leone, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, told Axios that Gemini now has to win those customers with OpenAI sitting right next to it. The models are also coming soon to Google Antigravity and Gemini Agent, and developers can already connect Codex to Google’s platform.
