Albertans Reject Separation Referendum Process
About three-quarters of Alberta voters rejected beginning a process toward separation, affirming the province’s place in Canada and giving Prime Minister Mark Carney a political boost amid U.S. trade tensions and President Donald Trump’s annexation rhetoric. Premier Danielle Smith welcomed the result, said she would not call another separation referendum while in office, and pledged to pursue greater provincial control through other referendum questions. Preliminary results showed “Yes” leads on most of the other proposals, including greater authority over immigration and limits on access to some publicly funded services, though the official count was still pending. Political leaders were urged to address the grievances of voters who supported separation, while some separatists vowed to continue their campaign. The vote rejects a near-term path to separation but leaves debates over provincial autonomy and national unity unresolved.
