Nigerian House Seeks Nationwide Audit of Recovered Assets Since 1999
The Nigerian House of Representatives is pushing a comprehensive audit of assets seized or recovered by government agencies since 1999, including plans to create a digital national asset registry and an ad hoc committee to inventory, value, manage, and account for proceeds. Lawmakers say lack of centralized records and weak oversight have obscured the whereabouts and use of assets such as cash, property, shares, and vehicles, and reference the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act 2022 and constitutional provisions to justify enhanced transparency and accountability.
