India Leads World Rail Electrification at 99.6%
India has cemented its status as the global leader with 99.6% of its broad gauge railway electrified, surpassing major economies and second only to Switzerland, with rapid electrification of 48,072 route km between 2014 and 2026. The program has reduced diesel use from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, cutting carbon emissions and saving foreign exchange while enabling faster, more efficient, and cleaner rail operations.
