India has declared itself the world leader in railway electrification, with 99.6% of its broad gauge network now electrified, ranking just behind Switzerland which has 100% but operates a smaller system. The push accelerated from 2014 to 2026, electrifying 48,072 route kilometres—a sharp jump from the 21,801 kilometres electrified in the previous six decades—making the program one of the fastest globally. Indian Railways’ electrification reduces fossil fuel dependence, lowers diesel consumption from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to about 108 crore litres in 2024-25, and is expected to yield significant foreign exchange savings on fuel imports. The program also strengthens capacity, enables faster trains, and cuts carbon emissions, aligning with cleaner mobility and sustainable development goals. Some reports note that Indian Railways has added more than 1,260 MW of solar and wind capacity to support cleaner operations, further reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing energy security.
