AI Executives Urge Slower Frontier Development

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is urging the artificial-intelligence industry to slow the pace of frontier-model development, warning that rapid advances, autonomous cyberattacks, misuse and recursive self-improvement could outstrip human control. He said “pacing” would not halt research or commercial progress but would give developers more time to align and secure systems. Anthropic is granting independent evaluators, including METR, permanent employee-level access to review safety practices, assess model alignment and report incidents. Amodei proposed that AI companies in democratic countries establish common safety standards with governments, followed by international coordination that includes authoritarian states. His appeal follows reports of AI agents involved in cyber operations and potentially harmful biological, cyber and other activities. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman endorsed the call to “pace the frontier” and said OpenAI would also consider giving independent evaluators employee-like access.
