FBI Attributes $6.3 Billion Binance Heist to North Korea-Linked Group
Binance suffered a roughly $6.3 billion digital-asset heist on October 29, which it said involved attackers using EIP-7702 to gain authority over a hot wallet; the exchange uncovered multiple breach points and pledged to cover affected users’ losses. The FBI attributed the attack to North Korea-linked TraderTraitor, which it also blamed for the 2025 Bybit theft. The agency said hackers were converting stolen assets mainly into Ethereum and could launder them through decentralized finance and instant-swap services, and urged crypto operators to block transactions linked to identified addresses. Binance paused withdrawals while rebuilding systems and working with law enforcement and industry partners, reported that about $3 billion in assets had been frozen, and later reopened withdrawals in phases. Customers withdrew about $3.6 billion net by Sunday, while U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $643 million in outflows in their first trading session after the breach. President Donald Trump said the administration was still learning about the incident and did not confirm North Korea’s involvement.
