Google Lets Schools Enable Search Without Gemini

Google says Gemini and Search will be off by default for K–12 student accounts, with school administrators able to enable the services separately. Schools can enable Search without enabling Gemini, but Google does not offer a conventional AI-free version of Search, including its AI Overviews and AI Mode. Educators and parents warn those features could shortcut students’ research and critical thinking, while politicians and advocates accuse Google of using its position in schools to promote AI. Google says the policy gives schools more control and is promoting Guided Learning, designed to help students work through problems. The changes are expected to take effect in 2027, with Search configurations incorporating AI features.
