President Donald Trump told a Sioux City, Iowa, rally on Oct. 22, 2026, that Rep. Ilhan Omar used a fake name to be sworn into Congress and must immediately resign. He cited an Oct. 21 Justice Department filing by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office listing her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, read it aloud, said Republicans had picked up a House seat, and told Speaker Mike Johnson in the audience that she had conceded her seat. The filing, meant to keep a search warrant sealed after the New York Times and others sought release, does not establish a fraudulent identity claim; Omar has not been charged. An Omar spokesperson called the claim completely false, said Ilhan Omar is her real name, and said it is disgraceful that media give this lie oxygen. Omar told Chris Hayes 'Not to my knowledge' when asked if she was related to ex-husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi; Trump said on the White House South Lawn that tells you a lot right there. Homeland Security Investigations searched her Washington home on Oct. 12 and seized a phone, computer and passport. Minnesota prosecutors are investigating possible false information on immigration documents. Omar was born in Somalia, fled civil war in 1991, spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp, and has said her birth certificate was destroyed. CONTESTED: no contested claims found

Whose framing of this story rings truest to you?
This name dispute feels like a distraction when there are bigger problems Congress should be addressing right now.
Trump is right to demand accountability if Omar has been misleading voters about basic facts like her name.
