Jordanian Strikes in Syria Draw Civilian Casualty Claims
Jordanian warplanes struck alleged Islamic State-linked militant targets in Syria’s Daraa and Suwayda provinces, saying the operation was retaliation for a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church funeral in Karak that killed nine people and wounded more than two dozen. Jordan said the strikes killed more than 20 militants and destroyed a weapons depot, and expressed regret over civilian deaths; Syria reported at least seven civilians, including children, killed and condemned the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty carried out without prior notice, disputing Jordan’s claim of coordination. Both governments said they would communicate on security cooperation, while Syria closed its main border crossing with Jordan, suspending passenger and commercial traffic. Jordanian authorities arrested three suspects in connection with the church attack, for which no group has claimed responsibility.
