The rare black-crowned night heron was captured on cameras at Holnicote Estate in Somerset, marking one of the UK’s rare sightings and highlighting ongoing freshwater restoration led by the National Trust. The sighting is framed as validation of landscape-scale river and wetland work—beaver-assisted hydrology, wetland creation, and habitat restoration—that are boosting biodiversity and resilience to drought in the region.

About black-crowned night heron

The black-crowned night heron or black-capped night heron, commonly shortened to just night heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, including parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America. In Australasia it is replaced by the closely related Nankeen night heron, with which it has hybridised in the area of contact.
