Geralt of Rivia (Polish: Geralt z Rivii) is a fictional character created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and a central protagonist of his The Witcher short stories and novels. Introduced in the short story "The Witcher" in 1986, Geralt is a travelling monster hunter for hire. He belongs to a group of fighters known as witchers, who undergo training and mutations that give them superhuman abilities.
Geralt's relationship with his adoptive daughter, Ciri, drives much of the saga. Other important relationships include his romance with the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg and his friendship with the bard Dandelion, called Jaskier in the original Polish texts.
Geralt is also the main playable protagonist of CD Projekt Red's original The Witcher video game trilogy. In live-action adaptations, Michał Żebrowski portrayed him in The Hexer and its television counterpart. Henry Cavill played him in the first three seasons of Netflix's The Witcher, with Liam Hemsworth taking over in the fourth season, released in 2025.

Short stories and novels
Geralt is raised and trained at Kaer Morhen after his mother, the sorceress Visenna, entrusts him to the witchers. Vesemir, one of his instructors, becomes a father figure to him. During the Trial of the Grasses, Geralt shows unusual tolerance for the mutations and is subjected to additional experiments, which turn his hair white. He is consequently known as the White Wolf, or Gwynbleidd in the fictional Elder Speech.
His mutations enhance his reflexes and senses, increase his resistance to disease and slow his ageing. He supplements his swordsmanship with alchemical preparations and simple magical spells known as Signs. Despite the belief that witchers are unfeeling, Geralt experiences strong emotions and forms close attachments. His claims to professional neutrality repeatedly come into conflict with his concern for others.
Geralt does not originally come from Rivia. He adopts the territorial surname to make himself appear more trustworthy to potential clients, following Vesemir's advice to choose a name suggesting a place of origin. In Baptism of Fire, he helps Queen Meve's forces fight a battle at a bridge over the Yaruga. Meve subsequently knights him as Geralt of Rivia, giving official recognition to the name he had already chosen.
As an itinerant witcher, Geralt earns his living by accepting contracts to deal with monsters. He wears a wolf medallion and calls his successive horses Roach (Polish: Płotka), a name referring to the freshwater fish. In "The Lesser Evil", he becomes involved in a conflict between the wizard Stregobor and the outlaw Renfri. His killing of Renfri and her followers in Blaviken earns him the epithet "Butcher of Blaviken".
In "A Question of Price", Geralt helps Duny, the lover of Princess Pavetta of Cintra. When offered a reward, he invokes the Law of Surprise, asking for something Duny possesses but does not yet know about. Pavetta's pregnancy is then revealed, binding Geralt to their unborn child, Ciri.
The stories in Sword of Destiny develop this bond. Geralt meets Ciri in the forest of Brokilon but initially leaves her in the care of others. In "Something More", he saves the merchant Yurga from monsters and invokes the Law of Surprise again. When they reach Yurga's home, Geralt discovers that the merchant's wife has taken in Ciri after the fall of Cintra. Their reunion leads him to accept responsibility for her.
Reception
In a chapter of Past for the Eyes, Kacper Pobłocki interpreted Geralt as an emblem of the "neo-liberal anti-politics" of Polish popular culture in the 1990s, describing a professional who wishes to perform his work without entering political disputes. Sapkowski, discussing his work in a 2020 interview with Publishers Weekly, said that he disliked politics and considered his books politically neutral.
Critic Dominika Materska, later known as Dominika Oramus, compared Geralt to Raymond Chandler's detective Philip Marlowe. In a 2017 study of the novels and games, Dawid Matuszek argued that Geralt's characterization complicates conventional heroic masculinity, particularly through his relationships with women and his role as Ciri's adoptive father.
GamesRadar+ placed Geralt sixth in its list of the 25 best video game heroes, praising his imperfect but fundamentally decent character.
In other media
Film and television
Michał Żebrowski portrayed Geralt in the Polish film The Hexer (2001) and the television series of the same name (2002), both directed by Marek Brodzki. He later voiced Henry Cavill's Geralt in the Polish dub of Netflix's adaptation.
Cavill played Geralt in seasons 1–3 of Netflix's The Witcher. Tristan Ruggeri portrayed him as a child in the first season. Hemsworth succeeded Cavill in season 4, which premiered on 30 October 2025, and was cast for the fifth and final season as well. The fourth season also introduced Jacek Rozenek, Geralt's Polish voice actor in the games, as the character's Polish dubbing actor in place of Żebrowski.
A young Geralt appears in the animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021), voiced by Harry Hissrich. Doug Cockle, his English voice actor in the video games, voices Geralt in The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, released on 11 February 2025. The latter film adapts Sapkowski's short story "A Little Sacrifice" and is set within the continuity of Netflix's series.
Video games
Geralt is the main playable protagonist of CD Projekt Red's The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (2011) and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015). The trilogy develops a continuation of his adventures after the original saga, within a continuity separate from Sapkowski's books. His principal voice actors in the trilogy are Jacek Rozenek in Polish and Doug Cockle in English.
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Geralt searches for Ciri and seeks to protect her from the Wild Hunt. The game allows players to make choices that affect relationships and the outcomes of quests. Its expansions Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016) provide further adventures. In its December 2024 announcement of The Witcher IV, CD Projekt Red identified Ciri as the new game's protagonist.
Geralt has also appeared in crossovers with other games. He is a playable guest fighter in Soulcalibur VI (2018). In 2019, Monster Hunter: World introduced a crossover quest featuring Geralt, with Cockle returning for the English voice performance. That year, Daemon X Machina added cosmetic customization options allowing players to model their characters on Geralt and Ciri.
Geralt became an unlockable outfit in Fortnite Battle Royale through its Chapter 4, Season 1 Battle Pass in February 2023. In June 2025, Dead by Daylight introduced him as a Legendary Outfit for the survivor Vittorio Toscano, with new voice lines recorded by Cockle.
Commemoration
In 2018, a square in Sapkowski's hometown of Łódź was named after Geralt.
In November 2019, the Mint of Gdańsk launched a series of collector coins based on The Witcher books, produced in cooperation with Sapkowski. The first releases depicted scenes from The Last Wish, including Geralt's adventures.
In October 2021, a mural of Geralt designed by Jakub Rebelka was unveiled on three walls of a residential tower at 182 Piotrkowska Street in Łódź. The city's tourism organization described it at the time as Poland's largest mural, extending more than 70 metres in height.
