Colonel John Tayloe III was an American planter, merchant, politician, and banker. Although his father and grandfather had served on the Virginia governor's council, Tayloe like his father sided with the Patriot cause during the American Revolution and then served in both houses of the Virginia General Assembly. A successful planter, businessman, banker, director, and early Thoroughbred breeder/importer, he was considered the "wealthiest man of his day".
