It operated as the rugby league department of Paris Saint-Germain FC. Founded in 1995, the club was established as part of an expansion project for the Super League, the top division of the British rugby league system, in which it competed from 1996 until its closure in 1997. Created under president Jacques Fouroux with the support of French media giants Canal+ and Australian media conglomerate News Corp Australia, PSG RL became the first French team to participate in the competition. The club played its home matches at the Stade Sébastien Charléty, with a capacity of 20,000 spectators.
