Early life and education

Sai Pallavi Senthamarai Kannan was born on 9 May 1992 into a Badaga family in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Her ancestral hometown is Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district. She was born to Senthamarai Kannan, a Central Excise officer and former football player, and Radha Kannan, a dancer.

Growing up in a household that emphasized both physical athletics and artistic expression, Pallavi developed a passion for sports from an early age and is an avid badminton player. Her younger sister, Pooja Kannan, also entered the film industry as an actress.

Pallavi was raised in Coimbatore and completed her primary and secondary education at Avila Convent School. Following the completion of her schooling, she chose to pursue higher studies in medicine abroad and enrolled at the Tbilisi State Medical University in Georgia. She completed her medical training and graduated with a Medical Degree (MD) in 2016, a degree recognized by the Medical Council of India.

On 31 August 2020, Pallavi took and successfully passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) held in Trichy to validate her foreign medical qualifications in India. Despite completing her medical education, she chose not to register as a practicing medical physician, electing instead to pursue a full-time career in acting and cinema.

In addition to her native Badaga, Pallavi is multilingual and speaks Tamil, English, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Georgian.

Acting career

Early career (2005–2013)

Pallavi's initial foray into the film industry began with uncredited roles as a background dancer and junior artist. She made her first on-screen appearance as a child artist in the Tamil film Kasthuri Maan (2005). She later appeared as a junior artist in Dhaam Dhoom (2008), where she can be seen in the background. Prior to these minor roles, her natural inclination toward performing arts was evident during her schooling years in Coimbatore, where she frequently participated in cultural events and local dance competitions. Despite these early brushes with the camera, she did not immediately pursue full-time acting opportunities, prioritizing her primary and secondary education instead.

Her early dance career included participation in television reality shows. In 2008, she competed in the Tamil dance show Ungalil Yaar Adutha Prabhu Deva on Vijay TV, followed by her participation in Dhee Ultimate Dance Show (D4) in 2009, where she was a finalist. Her high-energy performances on television earned her a significant following among regional audiences, introducing her distinct dance style characterized by fluidity and expressive micro-facial movements. These televised competitions laid the groundwork for her future cinematic breakthrough, as video archives from these shows eventually caught the attention of filmmakers years later.

During this period, she also appeared in television advertisements and acted in the short film Kaatchi Pizhai. also she was the first choice for the film happy days by sekhar kamula but she didn't accept because of her studies. Director Sekhar Kammula had initially envisioned her for a role in his coming-of-age musical drama Happy Days (2007) after noticing her on a dance reality show. However, Pallavi turned down the offer to focus entirely on finishing her school education, maintaining her family's commitment to academics.

Breakthrough (2014–2016)

She was the first choice for the female lead in Madras (2014) opposite Karthi. Director Pa. Ranjith had initially approached her for the role of Kalaiarasi, a strong-willed girl from North Chennai. While Pallavi found the script compelling, she ultimately declined the offer to ensure it did not conflict with her medical studies at Tbilisi State Medical University in Georgia, leading the makers to eventually cast Catherine Tresa.

Pallavi was in her pre-final year of medical school in Georgia, entirely focused on her exams, Malayalam film-director Alphonse Puthren had approached her six years before, through clippings from a reality show which she had participated, showcased in Facebook. Alphonse initially gave her an offer to act in his film which she refused, and after six years, he phoned to Pallavi, in which she thought him as a stalker and wanted to lodge a police complaint on him. But later misunderstood after Alphonse forcibly introduced himself. Then, she accepted the role of Malar in his film Premam. But, he originally wanted to cast Asin for the role of "Malar," but the character was later rewritten to be a Tamilian. The character's cultural identity shift allowed Pallavi to utilize her native Tamil accent, creating a unique linguistic juxtaposition within a mainstream Malayalam film that resonated deeply with cross-border audiences across South India.

In 2014, five members of the film team actually flew to Coimbatore to officially audition her. Once finalized, Sai Pallavi flew back to India and shot her scenes as Malar, a lecturer entirely during her college holidays. The moment her shooting schedule wrapped up, she flew right back to Georgia to continue her medical exams, completely detaching herself from acting. The film went on to become an unprecedented cultural phenomenon, with her realistic, no-makeup portrayal of an organic, flawed character receiving immense praise from critics and moviegoers alike. She went on to win several "Best Female Debut" awards that year, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

After that, she received an offer to star in Meyaadha Maan (2017) opposite Vaibhav, but the project did not materialize. Director Rathna Kumar had envisioned her for the emotionally demanding role of S. Madhumitha, but scheduling conflicts with her final medical examinations forced her to opt out, paving the way for Priya Bhavani Shankar to make her feature film debut in the role.

Career progression and fluctuations (2017–2019)

The year 2017 marked her debut in Telugu cinema with Sekhar Kammula's romantic drama Fidaa, in the role of Bhanumathi, a feisty village girl from Telangana. To prepare for the film, she worked extensively with language coaches to master the unique dialect and cadence of the Telangana region, rendering her own lines seamlessly. Her performance in the film was highly acclaimed and was regarded as one of the "100 Greatest Performances of the Decade" by Film Companion. She went on to win her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for her role.

During this peak period, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga initially approached her to play the female lead, Preethi, in the romantic drama Arjun Reddy (2017) opposite Vijay Deverakonda. However, Pallavi declined the offer due to her discomfort with the film's highly intense theme, depictions of physical abuse, and extensive onscreen intimacy, leading the makers to eventually cast Shalini Pandey. Later that year, she starred in the action comedy film Middle Class Abbayi alongside Nani, which emerged as a major critical and commercial success.

Her next project came when director A. L. Vijay announced that he would direct her in a script he had written "three and a half years ago" for Lyca Productions. He chose to cast Sai Pallavi after a planned Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Charlie (2015) with R. Madhavan was shelved. After securing her dates, Vijay finalized his technical crew, including cinematographer Nirav Shah and editor Anthony. This project, released as Diya, marked her official Tamil debut after she had previously stepped away from, been replaced in, or experienced the cancellation of several high-profile projects. Notably, she had been cast and successfully auditioned for a doctor's role in Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai (2017) opposite Karthi, but was ultimately not cast because the director preferred a visually older actress, with the role subsequently going to Aditi Rao Hydari. She also opted out of Vijay Chander's Sketch (2017) before production, while her planned films Charlie and Rajiv Menon's Sarvam Thaala Mayam were indefinitely postponed. Diya, a Tamil–Telugu bilingual, ultimately had an average run at the box office.

In May 2018, it was announced that Vijay Deverakonda would collaborate with debutant director Bharat Kamma for Dear Comrade. While the first look poster was unveiled on 9 May 2018, and Pallavi was the original choice for the female lead, she ultimately declined the script due to the extensive lip-lock scenes required in the narrative. Her strict professional boundaries regarding onscreen intimacy generated widespread discussion in regional media, highlighting her selective nature regarding artistic scripts over mainstream expectations.

Established actress (2020–2023)

In 2020, she was recognised by Forbes magazine as one of India's 30 under 30. She was the only person from film industry in that list. This inclusion highlighted her substantial economic influence and widespread marketability within the highly competitive regional film landscapes. She also acted in a Netflix anthology film series Paava Kadhaigal segment Oor Iravu directed by Vetrimaaran. She portrayed Sumathi, a character caught in a complex situation. The narrative explores the clash between love, societal pressures, and notions of honor, with Sumathi's character at the center of this conflict, earning a nomination for SIIMA Award for Best Actress – Tamil.

In early 2021, she was approached by production teams to star in high-profile Tamil films alongside top stars, including Vijay and Ajith Kumar. However, because the proposed female characters lacked significant narrative depth, she turned down the offers. Pallavi publicly maintained that she preferred focusing her creative energy on scripts where the female protagonist has significant agency and dramatic narrative weight rather than appearing in conventional decorative roles alongside established stars. That same year, she was also approached by director Meher Ramesh to play the pivotal role of Chiranjeevi's younger sister, Mahalakshmi, in Bhola Shankar (2023), a Telugu remake of the Tamil film Vedalam (2015). Pallavi declined the offer, later clarifying at a public promotional event that she harbor a general hesitation and fear toward acting in remakes; the character was subsequently portrayed by Keerthy Suresh.

In 2021, she starred in the romantic drama Love Story directed by Sekhar Kammula alongside Naga Chaitanya for the first time and in her second collaboration with Sekhar Kammula after Fidaa (2017)

Her next periodic-based film Shyam Singa Roy opposite Nani in their second collaboration after MCA where she portrayed Maithreyi, a captivating devadasi in 1970s Kolkata. A song from the movie "Pranavalaya" received praise and showcases her dance skills. Her performances in both Love Story and Shyam Singha Roy earned her the Critics Award and the Best Actress award at the Filmfare Awards South.

In 2022 she appeared in Telugu film Virata Parvam opposite Rana Daggubati. Set against the backdrop of the Naxalite movement in 1990s Telangana where she portrayed Vennela. The film was released theatrically on 17 June 2022. But though it received positive reviews the movie and underperformed at the box-office. A critic for Pinkvilla rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "Sai Pallavi's glorious performance is the only thing that keeps the love story from seeming farcical and flimsy".

Widespread recognition and expansion (2024– present)

Her only film in the year 2024 which was in Tamil titled Amaran along with Sivakarthikeyan produced by Kamal Hassan under Raaj Kamal Films International directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy. she played Indhu Rebecca Varghese, wife of Major Mukund Varadarajan. Her acting in the film has been widely praised for its authenticity and ability to convey a range of complex emotions. But some critics have pointed out that Pallavi's Malayalam accent in the film was not entirely authentic, and that her character, while emotionally impactful, felt somewhat underutilized in the film. The film became a sleeper hit at the box office, emerged as the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, garnering widespread critical acclaim for its engaging screenplay, based on the real life incidents revolving around veteran Indian army officer. For her performance, she earned her 7th filmfare award for Best Actress.

In 2025, she played the female lead opposite Naga Chaitanya titled Thandel, making it their second film collaboration after Love Story. Based on a real-life incident that occurred in 2018, depicting how Pakistani forces captured a fisherman from Srikakulam in international waters. The film emerged a commercial success. Her portrayal of Satya solidified her reputation as a powerful and engaging performer. Avad Mohammad of OTTPlay wrote, "On the whole, Thandel is a deeply moving romantic drama, elevated by outstanding performances from Pallavi and Chaitanya. Her command over the colloquial rural diction added a high degree of emotional realism, enhancing the overall cinematic experience."

The following year, it was revealed that Pallavi had been the original choice for the lead role in the Telugu action comedy-drama Maa Inti Bangaaram (2026), directed by B. V. Nandini Reddy and produced by Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Raj Nidimoru under Tralala Moving Pictures. Initially conceived under the working title Kodalu, the project was planned as a light-hearted, comical family drama written specifically with Pallavi's soft, natural screen presence in mind. However, due to scheduling conflicts and her pre-existing commitments, Pallavi was unable to allocate dates for the film. Samantha subsequently stepped in to play the lead role herself, prompting writer Raj Nidimoru and director Nandini Reddy to significantly rewrite the script. They modified the narrative to incorporate heavy action elements and a more dynamic character arc tailored to Samantha's strengths, and the film ultimately emerged as a major commercial success, grossing over ₹100 crore worldwide.

Media image and artistry

Sai Pallavi is widely recognized as one of the highest-paid and most influential actresses in South Indian cinema. Film critics and media outlets frequently highlight her natural screen persona, emotive micro-expressions, and high-energy dancing abilities, which have become major commercial draws across multi-language film industries. She made her debut as a choreographer with the musical number "Rockaankuthu" in Premam (2015). "Saranga Dariya", adapted from a popular Telangana folk song, reached top positions on national music charts. In 2020, Pallavi was the only actress featured in Forbes India's annual "30 Under 30" list. She was ranked 20th in its list of the most influential stars on Instagram in South Indian cinema for the year 2021. In 2021, she became one of the most tweeted-about South Indian actress. In 2022, Forbes India included her in its inaugural "Showstoppers – India's Top 50 Outperformers" list, honoring individuals across cinema, sports, and business.

Artistic approach and public stances

This is Indian colour. We can't go to foreigners and ask them why they're white... That's their skin colour and this is ours. Africans have their own colour too and they are beautiful. What will I do with the money I get from such an ad? I'll go home and eat three chapatis or rice. I don't have big needs. I see if I can contribute to the happiness of people around me or if I can say that these standards we see are wrong.

Controversies

Working relationship allegations (2018)

During the promotional phase for the 2018 bilingual film Kanam (titled Diya in Tamil), actor Naga Shourya publicly alleged in an interview that Pallavi displayed short-tempered behavior and threw tantrums on set. Pallavi later addressed the remarks during a promotional event, expressing surprise and clarifying that she always respected her co-stars and maintained a professional demeanor on set, which led to the issue quietly subsiding.

Rejection of fairness cream endorsement (2019)

In 2019, Pallavi attracted public attention after rejecting a commercial advertisement deal worth ₹2 crore (equivalent to ₹2.6 crore or US$310,000 in 2023) for a fairness cream brand. Explaining her decision in subsequent interviews, she stated that she preferred to maintain her natural appearance without heavy makeup and refused to endorse products that could create self-image insecurities regarding skin tone, particularly among young women. Remarks on Kashmir conflict and religious violence (2022)

In June 2022, during a promotional interview with GreatAndhra for her film Virata Parvam, Pallavi commented on the subjective nature of religious violence. She stated that while the film The Kashmir Files (2022) depicted the tragic violence faced by Kashmiri Pandits during the 1990 exodus, it was philosophically comparable to recent incidents of cow vigilantism, citing an instance where a Muslim truck driver was assaulted and forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram." The snippet went viral on social media, leading to police complaints filed against her in Hyderabad and criticism from political groups who accused her of equating a historic genocide with localized crimes.
