Sarah Francesca Green (born 9 March 1961) is Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Helsinki and in 2026 became an Academy Professor of the Research Council of Finland. She is a specialist on the anthropology of borders and location, with a particular interest since 2017 on changes in the borders between people and animals in the Mediterranean and European contexts. In July 2025, Green was elected an overseas Fellow of the British Academy, and from 2019 to 2021 she served as President of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA), the largest anthropology association in Europe.
She has lived in Greece, the UK, the US, Italy and in Helsinki, Finland. In September 2016, Green was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant to develop new research, called Crosslocations, in the Mediterranean region. She was also awarded a Research Council of Finland project, called “Transit, Trade and Travel” which also concerned overlapping border regimes in the Mediterranean, though its focus is different from Crosslocations. In 2026 she began a six-year Academy Professorship funded by the Research Council of Finland, the most senior personal research grant awarded by that body, to lead a project entitled “Crosslocating Animal Transgressions” (CAT).
