The Associate (Spanish: El socio) is a 1946 Mexican drama film directed by Roberto Gavaldón and starring Hugo del Carril, Gloria Marín and Nelly Montiel. It is based on Jenaro Prieto's 1928 novel The Partner in which a financially struggling man invents a fictitious business partner in order to try to improve his prospects.
The film's sets were designed by the art director Manuel Fontanals.

Plot
Julián Pardo (Hugo del Carril) is a failed, highly ambitious young man struggling to make a name for himself in the cutthroat business world of Mexico City. Despite his continuous efforts, his low economic status and lack of capital leave him repeatedly shut out of lucrative high-stakes investments. Following yet another professional rejection from elite financiers who demand wealthy guarantees, a desperate Julián invents a calculated lie on the spot: he claims to be backed by an incredibly wealthy, mysterious foreign associate named Walter Davis. Recognizing the deep systemic biases of the local financial class, Julián intentionally gives his fictitious partner an Anglo-Saxon name to project elite international credibility.
To his astonishment, the deception works flawlessly. The mere mention of the prestigious "Mr. Davis" instantly shifts the mannerisms of his peers, granting Julián immediate access to high-society boardrooms, wealthy credit lines, and exclusive stock market operations. As his wealth and social capital skyrocket, Julián navigates complex double dealings, continuously attributing his cold, calculated business maneuvers to the unyielding instructions of the nonexistent Davis. This charade severely impacts his personal life, complicating his relationships with a prominent high-society woman, Anita (Gloria Marín), and the calculating, glamorous Graciela (Nelly Montiel).
The layout of the scam spirals into psychological torment as the shadow of Walter Davis completely takes over Julián’s life. Elite investors aggressively demand to meet the mysterious partner face-to-face, forcing Julián to orchestrate increasingly elaborate excuses, fake business telegrams, and calculated public diversions to preserve his corporate innocence. Gradually, Julián finds himself trapped by his own creation; he is unable to make any business or romantic decisions without the approval of the public monster he built. Driven to psychological instability by the crushing weight of the lie, the narrative builds toward a tragic climax where Julián realizes that to permanently destroy his inescapable associate and reclaim his identity, he must sabotage his entire corporate empire and pay the ultimate personal price to break the illusion.
