On Oct 17-18, 2026, more than 550,000 people took to the streets across 140+ cities in France according to Interior Ministry, protesting against rising cost of living, fuel prices, and education cuts. What started as high school students protesting for better teachers and school conditions has now turned into a national movement. Trade unions, farmers, yellow vest groups, and students all joined together. In Paris, Place de la Republique became the center of clashes. Police used tear gas and water cannons after some masked groups threw fireworks and stones. Cars, bins and a kiosk were set on fire and several shops were looted.
