Biography
Umm Habib bint al-Awwam was born in Mecca to al-Awwam ibn Khuwaylid and Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib, the paternal aunt of the Prophet Muhammad
She was married to Khalid ibn Hizam, the brother of Hakim ibn Hizam, and they had a daughter named Umm al-Hasan bint Khalid ibn Hizam. Umm al-Hasan was born either in Mecca or during the journey to Abyssinia. Her sister, Zaynab bint al-Awwam, was also married to Hakim ibn Hizam.
Migration to Abyssinia and the death of her husband
Umm Habib bint al-Awwam accepted Islam in Mecca and, together with her husband, migrated to Abyssinia during the first migration. According to a report transmitted by Hisham ibn Urwah from his father, Khalid was bitten by a snake while travelling to Abyssinia and died on the journey before reaching his destination. His death caused great sorrow to al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, Umm Habib's brother, who was already in Abyssinia and had been awaiting his arrival.
