Enbridge has begun construction on the Sunrise Expansion Program in British Columbia, a $4 billion project intended to add 300 million cubic feet per day of natural gas capacity to the Westcoast pipeline to meet domestic demand and support LNG exports such as Woodfibre LNG. The expansion involves about 140 kilometers (87 miles) of new pipeline installed alongside the existing line, with 11 looping segments and upgrades to compression to boost throughput. Canadian-made steel from InterPro Pipe and Steel in Saskatchewan will be used, underscoring a domestic-supply-chain emphasis. Indigenous participation remains central, with a 12.5% stake in the existing Westcoast system held by 38 First Nations and the option for them to take equity in the Sunrise project, supported by substantial work with Indigenous businesses to date. Officials say the project will generate thousands of construction jobs, contribute billions to GDP, and yield hundreds of millions in tax revenue, reflecting a rapid approval-to-construction timeline. The Sunrise expansion is positioned to improve Canada’s energy security and economic reconciliation goals by serving growing regional demand while enabling LNG export activity.
