BancaStato Opens Regulated Crypto Trading via Sygnum Avaloq
Swiss cantonal bank BancaStato has launched regulated cryptocurrency trading directly within its existing web and mobile banking apps by integrating Sygnum’s crypto infrastructure with Avaloq’s core banking system. The offering currently supports Bitcoin plus other major assets, with trading available through market orders by quantity or USD value, and all client assets held in Sygnum’s institutional custody off-balance sheet for regulatory protection. This makes BancaStato the first bank to use Avaloq’s software-as-a-service environment to enable crypto trading via API inside standard banking channels, reducing complexity by avoiding a separate order management system. The move aligns with broader European regulatory trends, notably the MiCA framework, which is pushing traditional wealth into regulated, bank-based crypto services and attracting a demographic of professionals seeking compliant channels. Sygnum emphasizes the custody, governance, and audits backing client holdings, while the integration aims to streamline access to both traditional and digital assets within a single banking relationship. Industry context notes that Liechtenstein-based licensing clearance for Sygnum’s Crypto-Asset Services played a role in enabling these types of partnerships, signaling growing institutional adoption of regulated digital asset infrastructure.
