Google is expanding its sign-in options with Selfie for sign-in, an optional selfie-video-based verification to aid account recovery when users are locked out or cannot access their device. Enrollment involves recording a guided, multi-angle face video that is encrypted and stored in the user’s account, with future sign-ins compared to the enrolled reference video to verify identity and restore access. The feature includes liveness checks and anti-impersonation safeguards such as deepfake resistance, and is intended to complement existing methods like passkeys, recovery contacts, and backup codes rather than replace them. Users control their data and can delete the stored selfie at any time, and the system also scans for suspicious sign-in activity as an added security layer. Rollout is gradual and not yet available for certain account types, such as Workspace accounts or those in the Advanced Protection Program; eligibility can be checked at g.co/signin-selfie.
