Trump Says He Will Remove 15% Tariff on Irish Whiskey

U.S. President Donald Trump said on September 13, 2026 that he will remove the U.S. tariff on Irish whiskey. He made the announcement during the trophy ceremony at the Irish Open in Doonbeg as he presented the winner's trophy to Shane Lowry. The crowd answered with loud whistling, cheering and applause. Trump said "Everybody's been bugging me" and "And I said, 'On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off'". He said he had discussed the issue with Taoiseach Micheál Martin and with Lowry. Outlets disagree on the current rate. Some report a 15% tariff; others cite 10% after the July cut in the EU standard rate from 15% to 10%. Trump announced in May he was lifting certain tariffs on U.K. whiskey, including Scotch and spirits made in Northern Ireland. On April 30 he said he gave the U.K. a whiskey tariff break after King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited the White House, posting "The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking!". The Scotch Whisky Association said on July 24 that the zero-tariff policy had come into effect. In May the Irish Whiskey Association called for the Irish tariffs to be removed. Trump departed Shannon Airport aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening, ending his two-day visit to Ireland. No details were immediately available on when the tariff would be lifted.
