UCF survives FGCU in overtime, 96-95
UCF opened its season with a narrow 96-95 overtime win over Florida Gulf Coast, escaping after the Eagles pushed the Knights throughout the game. Dior Johnson, back at UCF after a season at Tarleton State, scored 41 points to lead the Knights, while Arturo Dean added key second-half production. FGCU led 38-36 at halftime and rallied repeatedly, with Bryson Lucas recording 25 points and 10 rebounds and Justin Houser scoring 20. Chase Koniecny’s late basket sent the game to overtime, and after Johnson’s free throws gave UCF a four-point lead in the final seconds, Lucas hit a three to make it a one-point game. Johnson missed two free throws with seconds left, giving FGCU one last chance, but Lucas’s long heave at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
