DP World, EBRD sign €25m green loan
DP World and the EBRD have signed a loan of up to €25 million to electrify the Constanța South Container Terminal in Romania, marking the terminal’s first dedicated green loan as part of a €100 million investment program to cut CO2 emissions by more than 6,000 tonnes annually. The plan replaces aging diesel equipment with electric alternatives and introduces shore power for berthed vessels, aiming to improve air quality, reduce noise, and increase operational reliability. Financing combines the EBRD loan with EU and Romanian government grants, including a €19.7 million AFIF grant and €7.5 million from Romania’s Transport Programme 2021-2027. The investment comprises two components: €53.8 million for core electrification infrastructure such as new networks and shore power systems, and €46.2 million for electric cargo-handling equipment including electric cranes and terminal tractors. DP World Constanța CEO Svitlana Balaban said the project reflects how sustainable ports drive competitiveness and position Constanța as the Black Sea’s leading green container hub. The broader goal is to modernize port operations to support greener, more resilient supply chains.
