Mayor Says Trump Agreed to Visa for Slain Ghanaian Teen's Mother
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Saturday he spoke with President Donald Trump, who agreed to grant an immediate visa for the mother of Javits Frimpong so she can say goodbye in person. Frimpong, 15, from Ghana, was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday walking to school in the Bronx and pronounced dead later that day at a hospital. He arrived about a year ago to reunite with father Thomas Frimpong. "The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away," Mamdani wrote. Thomas Frimpong said the principal told him two students were suspended for bothering Javits; he checked on his son beforehand and Javits said he was doing well. Police have not linked those reports to the shooting. No arrests have been made. One source said police seek three teenagers seen on cameras fleeing the scene. Rep. Ritchie Torres said the borough mourns a young man who should have had his whole future ahead of him. Ghana Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said officials will work tirelessly with US authorities to ensure justice is secured. The White House did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request on the visa.
