Glacier Collapse Triggers Nepal-Tibet Floods
Deadly flash floods and a glacier collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border have left hundreds dead and thousands missing across Nepal and Tibet, with Nepal reporting about 469–475 fatalities and more than 1,000 unaccounted in some updates. Rescue efforts continue as authorities, agencies, and international partners work to locate survivors, evacuate communities, and address damaged roads, bridges, and communications infrastructure. There remains a significant risk of further disasters due to fast-forming barrier lakes and ongoing floodwaters threatening downstream areas on both sides of the border, prompting warnings and evacuations by Nepalese and Chinese authorities. The Rasuwagadhi border crossing and surrounding hydroelectric and other infrastructure have been severely disrupted or wiped out, altering regional transit and relief logistics. Social media footage shows widespread devastation, with mud and debris in districts such as Nuwakot along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi corridors. International agencies and neighboring countries have mobilized warnings, rescue support, and fundraising to aid affected communities.
