Iranian Strikes Test Jordan’s US Alliance

Jordan’s longstanding security partnership with the United States has made the kingdom a target of repeated Iranian drone and missile strikes, including attacks on military facilities hosting U.S. forces. Amman nevertheless remains committed to the alliance, which officials and analysts view as essential to countering Iranian influence and protecting Jordan amid wider regional instability. A 2021 defense agreement gives U.S. forces access to 12 Jordanian installations, and the country has served as a key logistics and operational hub for American aircraft. The risks come as Jordan also confronts a strained economy, refugee pressures, inflation, weak tourism and escalating Israeli settler violence in the neighboring West Bank.
