J.J. McCarthy Takes Over as Giants’ Starting QB
The Giants named J.J. McCarthy their starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Texans after benching Jameis Winston, who threw two interceptions in a 34-27 loss to the Saints. McCarthy replaced Winston in the fourth quarter, throwing a 46-yard pass to Malik Nabers and scrambling 28 yards in the final minute. The 23-year-old went 6-4 in 10 starts with the Vikings and was traded to New York for a 2027 fifth-round pick. The Giants are without injured starter Jaxson Dart. McCarthy said he has been vocal with coaches about plays and situations he is comfortable with. “It can’t just be an, ‘I love everything, coach,’ because you’re trying to please them,” he said. John Harbaugh said some play types will be more in McCarthy’s world than Winston’s and others less so, while concepts and blocking schemes stay the same and will not be a big adjustment for teammates. McCarthy stayed after Wednesday practice working on timing with Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields and Darnell Mooney. Texans pass rushers Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter have 7.5 and 3.0 sacks. Cornerback Paulson Adebo practiced in limited capacity after designation for return from injured reserve.
