British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told The Economist on November 5, 2026 that Vladimir Putin will not be invited to the G20 summit set for Manchester in November 2027. Asked directly, he answered "no." Burnham said Putin "will not be coming because of an outstanding sanction" on senior Russian officials, and that while the G20 itself handles invitations and attendance is "technically possible," sanctions mean he will not come. The stance contrasts with Donald Trump's invitation of Putin to the December 2026 G20 in Miami, a move criticized by Donald Tusk and Kaja Kallas. Russia remains a G20 member; Ukraine is not. Russia was expelled from the G8 in 2014 after annexation of Crimea, and the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023 over alleged unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children. In October 2026 the G20 foreign ministers' family photo was cancelled after European diplomats declined to stand with Sergei Lavrov. Ed Miliband told Lavrov: "Let me say this directly to the Russian foreign minister: We all know who the aggressor in this war is." Dame Harriett Baldwin later questioned Miliband in Parliament about those interactions. Burnham said hosts must aim "to find global agreements on AI," adding that without them "the risks of recent times will magnify, they will significantly intensify."

“Putin will not attend Manchester G20 summit, Burnham says”Britain should keep supporting Ukraine, but I hope the focus stays on finding a real path to peace rather than just more exclusions.
It's good the UK is enforcing sanctions and keeping Putin out of the G20 even if Russia is a member. Actions like this matter.
