No. 1 Miami Underdog at No. 4 Notre Dame
Notre Dame, ranked No. 11 in the College Football Playoff standings, upset No. 1 Miami 31-24 in South Bend, ending the Hurricanes’ undefeated season and strengthening the Irish’s playoff hopes. Notre Dame built a 24-3 lead before Miami rallied, but quarterback CJ Carr completed 29 of 40 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Miami’s late fourth-down pass to tight end Elija Lofton fell incomplete after defensive back Luke Talich knocked the ball free on a play that would have tied the game. Miami coach Mario Cristobal criticized the ruling, saying Lofton had possession with both feet in bounds, while coverage and a rules analyst supported the officials’ decision that he had not completed the catch. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman called the victory special but said the team still had to finish its remaining schedule to stay in the playoff picture.
