Gonzalez Wins Reelection in GOP-Redrawn Texas District
Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez defeated Republican Eric Flores to win reelection in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, keeping the seat in Democratic hands and denying Republicans a pickup they had targeted. The district was redrawn to favor Republicans, and President Trump had carried it by 10 percentage points under the new boundaries. Flores, a former federal prosecutor and National Guard veteran who aligned himself with Trump, argued Gonzalez had not delivered enough for the district; Gonzalez emphasized affordability and his record of securing federal investment. Gonzalez’s win came in heavily Latino South Texas, where he overcame the district’s more Republican tilt to secure a sixth term in Congress.
