Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland won New Mexico’s governor’s race, becoming the first Native American woman elected governor of a U.S. state. She defeated Republican Gregg Hull, who conceded, and her victory keeps the governor’s office in Democratic hands for the first time since 1982. A member of Laguna Pueblo, Haaland previously became the first Native American cabinet secretary and one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress. She campaigned on protecting residents from President Donald Trump’s policies, making life more affordable and maintaining the state’s universal child-care initiative. Haaland will take office on New Year’s Day and must prepare for the state’s legislative session in January.
