US stocks surge after Republicans lose sole control of Washington

U.S. stocks surged after Republicans lost their sole control of Washington in the midterm elections, with the S&P 500 rising as much as 1.8%, the Dow gaining more than 1,100 points and the Nasdaq also advancing. Solar companies were among the early beneficiaries, while investors raised concerns about Trump Media, parts of the AI sector and businesses associated with Republican donor Elon Musk. Democrats’ expected control of both chambers of Congress could provide a political counterweight to President Donald Trump, although he retains executive powers over areas including trade and foreign policy. Analysts cautioned that election outcomes may have limited long-term influence on broad market performance, which is more closely tied to corporate earnings and interest rates, and warned of possible renewed tariff and NATO tensions.
