Trump touts White House ballroom after midterm losses
Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. President Donald Trump presided over the installation of the White House ballroom project's final beam. He promoted features including 50-foot ceilings, reinforced glass and an underground bunker while initially avoiding election results. Trump said he was not on the ballot and blamed candidates for the losses. Polling indicated his unpopularity hurt Republican contenders. Ron DeSantis called the GOP losses a "meteor strike" and said Florida held the line. Democrats won in swing states Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire and North Carolina and in Republican strongholds Iowa, Kansas, Texas and South Carolina. Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected governor of Georgia, the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. The mid-decade redistricting plan appeared to backfire. Democratic victories gave the party power to block legislation and investigate the administration.
