Plano Voters Reject Dallas Stars Arena Taxes
Plano voters rejected Proposition A, with about 54% opposing taxes on tickets, parking, hotel stays, car rentals and professional sports teams that would have helped the city repay up to $700 million in bonds for a proposed Dallas Stars arena at The Shops at Willow Bend. The vote does not prohibit the arena or the broader $3 billion redevelopment, but leaves a significant part of the project’s funding plan uncertain; the city and team say they will consider next steps. The Stars plan to lease the arena for 30 years. Supporters said the taxes would largely fall on visitors, while opponents raised concerns about financing, traffic and potential costs to residents. A separate tax increment reinvestment zone was approved, and Plano ISD estimates its participation could generate about $188 million in additional property-tax revenue over nearly 20 years after its capped contribution.
