Gausman exits with shoulder soreness as Cubs monitor status

Chicago Cubs right-hander Kevin Gausman left Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on September 23, 2026, after diving to tag Heriberto Hernández out at third base in the sixth inning. The play followed an infield single by Griffin Conine and a throw from Michael Busch to Gausman covering third. Gausman was removed right away with two outs and 101 pitches. He allowed six hits, including a two-run home run by Kyle Stowers, walked one, struck out seven, and went 5 2/3 innings for a no-decision. Manager Craig Counsell said the left shoulder got extended awkwardly and grabbed on him, leaving soreness. Gausman told reporters he felt fine until he stood up to check the other runner, when the left shoulder felt pretty weak and still did; he planned treatment and hoped it would be a couple-day thing. He had previously dislocated that shoulder in high school. The injury is to his non-throwing arm. The Cubs will monitor him before deciding on wild-card availability.
