Schlittler bolsters Cy Young case as Yankees blank Mets 2-0

Cam Schlittler allowed one hit across six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, lowering his major-league-best ERA to about 1.95 as the Yankees shut out the Mets 2-0. Ben Rice led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run, his 38th of the season, off Christian Scott. Austin Wells added a 392-foot solo blast into the right-field second deck in the third, snapping an 0-for-20 stretch. Those were the only runs. In the sixth, Bo Bichette smashed a 111.5-mph comebacker that struck Schlittler around the back of his right knee and hamstring, ending the starter's day after 94 pitches. Schlittler walked off under his own power to the clubhouse. Aaron Boone said Schlittler took the line drive "pretty good" off his hamstring but expects him to be okay. Brent Headrick, Paul Blackburn and David Bednar then completed the three-hit shutout, Bednar recording his 34th save. Scott matched much of the outing, giving up the two homers and three hits over six innings with seven strikeouts in his first career Subway Series start. There is no contested fact in this record. The Yankees finished a 5-1 homestand at 86-63; the Mets fell to 69-80.
